North of Kodiak, Afognak and Shuyak islands are cloaked in Sitka spruce forest, unlike the mostly treeless south of the archipelago. Shuyak Island State Park is known for its maze of protected channels — superb sea kayaking — and its rental cabins.
Afognak Island holds Afognak Island State Park and a herd of Roosevelt elk, introduced in 1929, which is hunted along with deer and bears.
