Homer & Kachemak Bay
The end of the road, with glaciers across the bay and halibut below.
Homer lies at the end of the Sterling Highway, about 220 road miles from Anchorage. The Homer Spit, a 4.5-mile gravel bar, holds the harbor, charter offices and seafood shacks, and looks across Kachemak Bay to glaciers spilling out of the Kenai Mountains.
Across the bay, Kachemak Bay State Park and the artist communities of Halibut Cove and Seldovia are reached only by water taxi, ferry or small plane. It is a base for halibut and salmon charters, sea kayaking, bear-viewing flights to Katmai and Lake Clark, and quiet hiking.
